In the United States, there are an estimated 1 million cases of shingles each year. Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). VZV is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body. Usually it does not cause any problems but sometimes it reappears years later, causing shingles.

The state guidelines for Preceptor Curriculum list five topics and eleven areas of focus.
