This course examines the epidemic of obesity in the United States and the challenges that face the bariatric client. Before completing this course, you should complete the course DMGT004 - Understanding Obesity.

Purpose: This is the final part of a three-part series exploring cultures, ethnicities, age-appropriate care, and historical issues that affect the present health care climate. ALL115a covers cultural competency in health care, ALL115b highlights age-specific considerations in health care, and ALL115c addresses past and current issues of the health care industry, such as racism and discrimination, and how to respond as an individual and facility.

In this course, learners will need to look not only at the systemic issues of racism in the industry, but also their own biases, prejudices, and influence on patients’/residents’ care. Becoming knowledgeable and more comfortable with often uncomfortable truths, acknowledging differences, and understanding the issues that both health care workers and patients/residents face are steps in breaking down historical barriers and broadening one’s perspectives.

You will learn what is social media, what privacy rights residents have related to social media, and types of possible criminal abuse via social media. You will study what the August 5, 2016 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) memo mandated that nursing homes do in regards to social media. In June 2016, the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) gave written guidance to members about what these policies may encompass, which will be discussed.

The Certified Environmental Access Consultant (C.E.A.C.) credentialing program is administered by VGM Live At Home. Environmental Access is the process of adapting the workplace, residence and/or general environment to promote the independence, safety and functional ability for the physically challenged and aging individuals. The C.E.A.C .is a recognized certification for professionals creating accessibility or working in the environmental access field. U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the federal agency responsible for oversight of employee safety. The guidelines in this course are based on OSHA regulations.

Any place of work is susceptible to violence in the workplace. An active shooter is a person actively engaged in killing or attempting to keep people in a confined space or other populated areas. This course guides nurses to respond in an active shooter wherever they are, including a hospital, nursing home, outpatient clinic, or any other health care facility.
