To enhance the participant’s knowledge and understanding of medications used to treat COPD including how they work, methods of administration, and side effects.

Description: Most people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) take some type of medication for relief of symptoms. Many types of medications are available for the treatment of COPD. Knowing the proper technique for using each medication and device needed for administration will go a long way in helping the patient get the most relief from their symptoms. There is no "best" drug regimen for COPD. All individual patients receive medications based on their symptoms and needs. Each person with COPD is different and the plan of care will be determined according to their individual needs and symptoms.


Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Discuss the different types of medications prescribed to treat COPD and the actions that make them therapeutic.
2. Explain the common methods of administration of COPD medications.
3. Discuss possible common side effects associated with the different medications used for COPD and the associated precautions recommended to limit the risk of side effects.
4. Discuss some of the common devices used for administration of COPD medications including the device sanitation processes.
