Health care professionals working in any setting will increase their understanding and skills in providing optimal care to patients from diverse cultures, religious beliefs, and varying age groups.
Purpose: Health care professionals working in any setting will increase their understanding and skills in providing optimal care to patients from diverse cultures, religious beliefs, and varying age groups.
Objectives: Upon completion of this self-study, participants will be able to:
1. Define terms related to cultural competence.
2. Identify the basic concepts of cultural diversity, including values, worldview, communication, and time orientation.
3. Discuss considerations to make when caring for patients of various religious and spiritual beliefs.
4. Discuss cultural differences as they relate to the African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Bosnian, Hispanic, and Asian cultures.
5. Discuss age-specific considerations including neonate to preschool, school age children, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
6. Describe the process for developing cultural competency.
