Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1.            Define suicidal ideation.

2.            Identify factors in suicidal ideation among older adults.

3.            List which mental health disorders are most commonly associated with suicide.

4.            Discuss the connection between trauma and suicide.

5.            Recognize risk factors of suicide.

6.            Identify the protective factors of suicide.

7.            Identify the warning signs of suicidality.

8.            Describe what steps to take during an intervention with a suicidal resident, patient, or colleague and how to resource them.

9.            Describe the various treatments, medications, and approaches used to prevent suicide.

10.          Explain the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of long-term care residents and workers.
