Description 

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent difficulties in social interactions, communication, and behaviors. In this course, health care workers will learn how to better meet the needs of autistic people in their care.

Objectives 

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to: 

  1. Describe identity-first language.
  2. Explain where the term autism derived from.
  3. Discuss the incidence rate of suicide in autistic persons.
  4. Recognize co-occurring mental health conditions.
  5. List the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder.
  6. Define the term camouflaging.
  7. Describe the function of the amygdala.
  8. List risk factors of autism spectrum disorder.
  9. Identify ways to better communicate with and accommodate autistic residents.
