Health care professionals will enhance their understanding of the complications associated with diabetes mellitus.

Purpose: To enhance the learner’s understanding of the complications of diabetes, including diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, heart, and kidney complications.

Objectives: Upon completion of this independent study, the participant will be able to:
1. Define the three major types of diabetes.
2. Explain diabetic retinopathy, the causes, and treatment.
3. Describe diabetic neuropathies, the causes, and treatment.
4. Outline the ABCs of cardiovascular care and the diabetic patient.
5. Describe the causes and treatment of cardiovascular complications.
6. Explain kidney complications associated with diabetes, the causes, and treatment.
