Purpose: This seven-module series about the care of people with dementia is written for all levels of caregivers and health care providers. Topics covered in this series include understanding dementia, communication, behavior management, philosophy of care, person-centered activities, activities of daily living, and ethical dilemmas. The information provided here includes strategies to assist with activities of daily living, such as bathing, personal hygiene, and eating. Medications prescribed for people with dementia will be discussed as well as any potential side effects.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Describe the importance and impact of helping preserve the activities of daily living for a person with dementia.
2. Discuss strategies for assisting people with dementia in activities of daily living in the following areas: dressing, grooming, eating, bathing, and toileting/incontinence.
3. Identify medications commonly prescribed for persons with dementia and discuss their side effects.
4. Explain how to detect and prevent malnutrition and dehydration.
