The information provided here includes the philosophy of care for dementia and how to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for individuals with dementia. This module will also cover family and staff issues common when caring for persons with dementia and ways to minimize the stress on caregivers.
This seven-module series about the care of people with dementia is written for all levels of caregivers and health care providers. Topics covered in this series include understanding dementia, communication, behavior management, philosophy of care, person-centered activities, activities of daily living, and ethical dilemmas. The information provided here includes the philosophy of care for dementia and how to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for individuals with dementia. This module will also cover family and staff issues common when caring for persons with dementia and ways to minimize the stress on caregivers.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Explain the importance of person-centered care in caring for persons with dementia.
2. List ways to maintain physical security and safety in the environment for persons with dementia.
3. Describe the importance of schedules and routines and your role as a caregiver.
4. Describe issues and concerns of family members of a person with dementia as well as the grief process and the ongoing losses that occur as the disease progresses.
5. Describe the causes of stress for the caregiver and the strategies and techniques for managing stress.
