Learning objectives

  1. Define bloodborne pathogen.
  2. Identify high-risk sharps devices linked to exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  3. Describe how to properly dispose of contaminated sharps in sharps containers.
  4. Recognize the components of the federal Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act.
  5. Identify ways to implement compliance of sharps injury prevention within a health care setting.
  6. Explain an employer’s responsibilities following an employee’s exposure to a bloodborne pathogen.
