Health care workers will understand the warning signs of Alzheimer’s, the diagnosis process, the stages of the disease, and how to keep the resident safe as well as how to care for a resident with Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia found in people over age 60. Although there is no cure, a variety of treatments are available to help reduce the symptoms. Alzheimer's disease can be identified primarily through symptoms with memory loss being the most common. This progressively deteriorating disease takes the resident through several stages. This course will help health care workers meet the challenge of communicating with and caring for the resident with Alzheimer's disease.

Objectives:
1. Be aware of the testing process used to identify AD.
2. Discuss the stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
3. Discuss the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
4. Discuss communication with the person that has Alzheimer’s disease.
5. Discuss personal care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease.
6. Identify medications used in the care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease.
7. Discuss management of behaviors related to dementia.
8. Gain knowledge of prevention of AD and future outlook.
