The nursing assistant will gain an increased understanding of nutrition principles and the unique considerations of the aging population.

Nutrition is the process by which all living organisms take in food and water to support and maintain health. Adequate nutrition gives the body energy, promotes growth, and strengthens the immune system. Older adults, those aged 65 or older, require proper nutrition to maintain a healthy body weight, protect against chronic disease, and support energy demands. This population may face unique nutritional and health challenges as part of the aging process.

Objectives:
1. Define nutrition.
2. List and discuss taking in nutrients and their use by the body.
3. Identify three nutrition challenges unique to older adults.
4. Identify the five major food groups and provide examples from each group.
