PURPOSE:  This is the first part of a three-part series exploring cultures, ethnicities, age-appropriate care, and historical issues that affect the present health care climate. Through taking this course, health care professionals will increase their understanding and skills in providing optimal care to residents from diverse cultures.

Objectives:Upon completion, you will be able to:

  1. Define terms related to cultural competence.
  2. Identify the basic concepts of cultural diversity including values, worldview, communication, and time orientation.
  3. Discuss cultural differences as they relate to white, black and African American, Native American and Alaska Native, Bosnian, Hispanic, Latino, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and Asian peoples.
  4. Describe the process for developing cultural competency.
