To enhance communication between the patient/resident with dementia and health care personnel.

Purpose:

This course for health care professionals explains the challenges of verbal and nonverbal communication when providing care for people with dementia. Behaviors that are not dementia, as well as types of dementia, are reviewed. Communication strategies such as avoiding direct questions, using appropriate body language, and reality orientation are detailed. The learner will also become familiar with activities and therapies that may help a person with dementia communicate.

Objectives:

1. List symptoms associated with dementia.
2. List symptoms associated with delirium, delusions, and hallucinations.
3. Summarize relevant communication techniques when providing care for residents with dementia and related disorders.
4. Describe reminiscing, various therapies, and activities that can assist the resident with communication.
